Description
Personal protective equipment(PPE) is considered the last line of defense in protecting both patients and healthcare providers (HCPs) from the transmission of hazardous pathogens in the healthcare environment. Nurses and infection preventionists are balancing staff and patient safety, prevention of hospital-acquired infections, and the ever-changing regulatory environment. Isolation gowns are a critical element of PPE, in that they prevent staff and patient exposure to infectious diseases and improve patient outcomes.
This continuing education activity will review the components and regulatory requirements for PPE and will describe the role of PPE in infection prevention in healthcare settings. Isolation gowns will be discussed as a critical element of infection prevention. Challenges related to compliance with the proper use of isolation gowns will also be reviewed, and strategies to promote compliance will be identified.
