Description
Much is written about the critical importance of proper cleaning and proper sterilization relative to safe surgical device preparation. However, without packaging that maintains sterility of a device until it is needed, all of the cleaning and sterilization efforts and activities are negated. At first glance packaging may not seem to be high-tech, however that would not be true. Packaging must allow a sterilant to enter and exit as well as prevent entry of microorganisms. Today’s packaging systems do that very well but only if maintained in accordance with packaging system guidelines, manufacturer’s written instructions for use and recognized practice guidelines.
This continuing educational activity focuses on what is required to maintain the sterile barrier. Although all types of packaging systems are discussed, the primary focus is on wrap and rigid sterilization containers and how to maintain them. Pre-purchase evaluation, use, between-use care and maintenance, preventive maintenance and storage are covered.
