The field of nursing now resides in a world of big data and increasing dependence on digital technology requiring all nurses to have an understanding and competence in nursing informatics. When used properly, nursing informatics could improve patient safety, decrease costs of providing nursing care, and provide better outcomes for patients. Informatics competencies, defined as acceptable levels of knowledge, skill, and ability, are essential for nurses to effectively adopt and use healthcare technologies to achieve these goals. Nursing leaders have an influential role in making sure digital technology is used effectively in their organization. Nursing leaders must possess a basic foundation of general nurse competencies in addition to nurse-leader specific competencies that allow them to choose the most effective technologies available for their healthcare organization, transform clinical care, and improve patient outcomes.
