Designing, standardizing, and implementing a custom surgical pack program has been identified by perioperative nurses and surgical services managers as a timesaving, cost-effective management practice. An online pack management program can add the real-time power of the internet to the convenience and efficiency of a custom pack program. This continuing education activity will familiarize perioperative nurses and nurse managers with the benefits of an online, information systems approach to managing custom packs. The advantages of using an online system for direct access to valuable information about a procedure pack program will be discussed. The five key functions of an online pack management system will be outlined. Finally, best practices for standardization of procedural supplies across an integrated delivery network or individual hospital will be described.
