In the perioperative practice environment, the prevention of infection for both surgical patients and healthcare workers is an overriding goal. The appropriate selection and use of surgical gowns are an essential component in infection control strategies. Therefore, perioperative nurses and surgical technologists must be knowledgeable about the key considerations in selecting and using gowns effectively in the surgical practice setting.
This continuing education activity will provide an overview of the considerations in the selection and use of surgical gowns as a protective measure for both patients and staff. It will review five criteria used in the selection of surgical gowns: barrier protection, flammability resistance, low linting, abrasion resistance, and comfort. The various types of materials used in the manufacture of surgical gowns, as well as the corresponding industry tests, will be discussed. Best practices in the donning, use and removal of surgical gowns will be explored. A case study will provide the participant with the opportunity to synthesize the information and evaluate workplace scenarios regarding best practices for surgical gown use.
