Description
Clinical alarms designed to protect patients by alerting providers to potentially life-threatening physiologic changes often lead to harm due to contributing factors such as excessive or non-actionable alarms. In particular, false alarms and non-actionable alarms contribute to a cacophony of noises in the practice setting that are creating alarm fatigue for providers already dealing with staffing shortages and caring for more high-acuity patients. Through greater awareness of what the hazards are specific to clinical alarms, what the evidence-based guidance is to mitigate these risks, and the roles each healthcare professional plays in improving clinical alarm management, teams can collaborate to develop solutions toward optimizing alarms in practice to achieve patient safety and staff wellbeing.
