Members of the perioperative team, led by the surgeon, can provide enhanced patient safety and outcomes by being knowledgeable and well-trained in the utilization and selection of stapling devices. Upon completion of this activity, the learner will gain knowledge regarding the common practices and advantages of surgical stapling along with the potential complications; understand tissue thickness and its relevance to cartridge selection; and learn how surgical staplers are selected and used today. Beginning with the evolution of surgical stapling and how stapling relates to the basic principles of surgery, the learner will progress to the best practices for providing optimal stapling results and safe patient outcomes.
