Description
Several diseases and operations may necessitate the need for the formation of a stoma and to live with a temporary or permanent ostomy. Proper ostomy care is vital from its creation, to peristomal skin management, to appliance application, and mental health management while dealing with challenges associated with this device. The purpose of ostomy care is to provide pouch changing instruction, skin protection, and prevention of stoma related complications. These patient care interventions also help support ostomates in their acceptance of this change in their activities of daily living (ADLs). In order to inform, support, and ease anxiety of patients with stomas, nurses should be knowledgeable of the causes of stoma creation and the types of stomas and appliances that are available. This activity will discuss the different types of ostomies and the components used for pouching systems. The role of the interprofessional team will be described while emphasizing best practices for ostomy management.
