Description
Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a common condition with potentially life-threatening consequences. Rigorous implementation of validated risk assessments and implementation of proven mechanical and pharmacologic prophylactic measures can help reduce the incidence of VTE and minimize long-term complications. This continuing education activity outlines data and statistics on the incidence of VTE, reviews symptoms and complications, and describes risk factors and risk assessment models. Steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of VTE are detailed, including staff and patient education and use of mechanical and pharmacologic prophylaxis, and selected guidelines and quality measures are described.
