Description
Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as PPE, is used throughout the healthcare industry to protect healthcare professionals from exposure to occupational hazards during a broad range of activities related to patient care. These activities can include direct patient care, such as during a surgical procedure or patient exam, or indirectly, such as sterile processing professionals who reprocess healthcare equipment. Specific knowledge about how to select, maintain, don and doff PPE, as well as knowledge about the hazards PPE is designed to block, is critical to reduce the risk of hazardous exposure. This learning activity will review the primary types of PPE used in any healthcare setting, the hazards PPE is designed to protect against, and the criteria that must be considered when selecting PPE. Regulatory requirements for PPE use will also be discussed and case studies will provide real-world applications of PPE to illustrate the implications associated with correct versus incorrect use of PPE in all healthcare settings.
