Description
Clinical burnout is a serious issue, particularly in the healthcare environment. The phenomenon of burnout is frequently described as an accumulation of stress, causing feelings of anxiety, as well as symptoms that may have physical, mental, and emotional components. The cause and prevention of burnout is multifactorial, but it appears to be related to the buildup of factors that affect any or all combinations of the human body and spirit. The increasingly complex healthcare environment produces mounting stressors and demands on individuals and organizations. Organizations must address the factors that are within their control to prevent burnout of their most precious commodity: their staff. This continuing education activity will describe observable symptoms of burnout, contributing factors, and opportunities to enhance resilience and prevent burnout. In addition, myths, facts, and recent events related to clinician burnout, will be explored.
