Bleeding is one of the most
dangerous complications of surgery and the biggest obstacle to wound healing.
Hemostasis is the first step in normal wound healing and is an important
strategy for the prevention of post-surgical adhesion formation. This
educational activity describes the process of normal wound healing, as well as
the consequences of delayed healing and the techniques and products used to
promote successful healing. The pathogenesis and consequences of adhesion
formation are also explained, followed by a discussion of the methods used to
prevent adhesions, including good surgical technique and the use of mechanical
barriers and pharmaceuticals.
