This online continuing education activity is one presentation from a live conference that was recorded on December 5-6, 2007 in Roswell, Georgia. This specific presentation on Influenza: A Seasonal & Pandemic Threat will benefit infection control physicians and specialists, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals seeking an update on the importance of annual outbreaks of influenza and the chances of a pandemic that would overwhelm medical facilities and personnel. Dr. Ison will present the virology of influenza (orthomyxovirus) including binding,replication, pathogenesis, and antigenic shift that has the capacity to spread from person-to-person and can lead to a pandemic worldwide. The physical and financial impact of influenza and the complications associated with influenza, the symptoms of infection, and influenza diagnostics will be discussed. Prevention of influenza will highlight the vaccination preparation process. Dr. Ison will describe the efficacy of current treatment by M2 and Neuraminidase inhibitors and introduce the newest drugs emerging as treatment options. This course will conclude with a brief summation of the next pandemic virus that has the potential to quickly impact the world.The purpose of this educational activity is to provide a comprehensive review of the current state of-the art of both seasonal and pandemic influenza. This videotaped presentation will be enhanced with synchronized audio recordings and PowerPoint slides.
