Today, the healthcare system is transitioning from a volume-based environment to one that is value-based; in this type of environment, successful outcomes are the most important metrics of a hospital’s performance and quality of care. Therefore, patients’satisfaction regarding their hospital experience now has a more significant impact on a hospital’s bottom line; a key measure of patient satisfaction is the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. This continuing education activity will present a review of the overall importance of measuring and reporting patient satisfaction scores in healthcare today. The relevant federal initiatives designed to incentivize hospitals to improve patient satisfaction will be discussed.The key aspects of care assessed in the HCAHPS survey and how these scores are measured and reported, will be reviewed. The role of the perioperative nurse in improving patient satisfaction scores for surgical patients will be explored. Finally, various interventions that are effective in improving patients’ satisfaction during their surgical journey will be outlined.
