Skin closure is an important part of all surgeries. Clinical considerations related to skin closure include risk of surgical site infections during all surgeries and additional risks for periprosthetic joint infections during orthopedic surgeries. Current trends indicate a shift in more complex orthopedic surgical procedures being performed in ambulatory surgery settings, including total joint procedures. As more orthopedic procedures are shifted to ASCs, healthcare providers need to focus on increased postoperative mobility and infection prevention. Infections can have serious effects on patient outcomes and may lead to hospital admission, which contradicts the intent of outpatient surgery. This education activity will review clinical considerations related to skin closure methods that can help meet the goal of infection risk reduction. The types of available skin closures will be presented, as well as how they can be differentiated from each other. Clinical outcomes for patients using different types of skin closures will be presented and compared.
